This is a special post by Baby Bear about bats that live in Europe, in the areas we’re currently visiting. This part of her on-the-road science project, where she researches four animals that might appear on our trip!
Pipistrelle Bats
Where they live
They have a lifespan of 4-5 years, and live in roosts with an average of 75 bats inside. They are usually found in trees or woodland in parts of Europe, North Africa, South-Central Asia, and America.
What they eat
The pipistrelle bats are the smallest bats in Europe and are insectivorous, meaning they eat bugs. They will eat flies and similar bugs, but their favorites are mosquitoes, gnats and midges, which they can eat 3,000 of in only 1 night. This means that they help keep down the insect population.
Fun fact
The sounds that pipistrelle bats make are so high that only kids and some adults can hear them.
