Fire Salamander
Small but dangerous
Where They Live
The Fire Salamander is a small amphibian, about 15-20 centimeters long, that lives in the damp forests of central and southern Europe, particularly in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and Poland. These salamanders need moisture to survive, especially when they have larvae, so they will need to find a damp or completely wet place to live. Though they prefer to take cover under leaves, mossy trunks, or stones near a river or creek, they will still take cover under moist wood, leaves, or rocks if those cannot be found.
Diet and Predators
The Fire Salamander is a very special lizard, as it is one of the most poisonous lizards in the world, secreting toxic liquids from glands on their backs and behind their eyes. These lizards eat spiders, millipedes, centipedes, and many insects. Their predators include skunks, snakes, otters, raccoons, and some birds.
